Background

In the west end of Toronto, deep in a basement, somewhere between the dryer and the furnace, Andrew McCready started brewing beer. The early beers were honed and honed. Then that beer entered homebrew contests and won a lot of prizes. When Andrew made brewing his job, he turned to AndSo to create a brand out of thin air. All he had was great beer and a name. Our job was to invent a brand worthy of the liquid within the can.

Branding

Hand made beer deserves a hand made brand. We began with looking at hand made crafts, such as paper and low-volume screen printing. We played with bleeding ink and textured backgrounds. The colour palette skewed orange and brown to dovetail into the design language of workwear and the people who work with their hands. A wordmark was born.

Design System

An orange tab sits at the centre of the Bickford Brewing brand. It can be as large or as small. The negative space within the tab forms two distinct shapes that are leveraged as photo and framing devices.

“The brand had to feel as handmade as my beer. AndSo understood the intention and truth of my products and guest experience and translated it into a one-of-a-kind brand and voice that we’ll use forever.”

Results

Bickford Brewing was featured on three influential beer sites in its first month. BlogTO, Toronto’s digital daily of record, covered the launch. And branded posters in Andrew’s storefront generated a flood of interest. The taproom opens Summer 2024.
